Gaining school experience

"Thank you very much for a brilliant day.  All the staff and children were so nice.  It was lovely to see a school day in progress."

"Thank you very much for today - It's been really interesting to see learning inaction, and to hear more about GLF."

We think having some school experience is important if you are considering training to be a teacher; it allows you to see the nature of the role and make sure that it is right for you before you apply or undertake your training.

We recommend that applicants have completed at least five days of recent experience in the classroom prior to applying so that you can reflect on your observations in your UCAS personal statement and discuss them at interview. We also encourage applicants to have experience in at least 2 schools over the last year.

Some of our applicants come to teaching through being a classroom assistant.  If you think you would benefit from spending time in school prior to applying for training, please see the GLF careers page.

School experience is not an essential part of your application and we have had candidates who were successful at interview without having had school experience.  We understand that if you are a career changer you may not be able to take time off work to gain school experience, but we still recommend that you gain school experience if possible.

We offer two initial days of secondary experience at Glyn School; the cost is £15 and payment will be required in advance.  The dates for 2018/19 applicants are now closed.  The dates for 2019/2020 applicants will be posted on our website later this year, once UCAS has opened.

We offer school experience in Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computing, English, MFL (French and/or Spanish), Music, Drama, Art and Design, Business Studies, PE, History, Geography and RS.  Availability of places is limited by faculty size, so please try and be flexible with your dates.

We offer one day of initial primary experience at Danetree School; the cost is £7.50 and payment will be required in advance.  Please note that you will need to attend the school in advance to carry out a short risk assessment.

The dates for 2019/20 applicants will be posted later this year, once UCAS has opened.

DfE School Experience Portal

You can also gain school experience in other primary and secondary schools through the DfE portal.  If you are keen to undertake schools experience as soon as you can in order to submit your teacher training application, we recommend that you sign up for DfE experience and GLF School's experience.
