Gaining school experience
** Update: Please note that our school experience programme for this academic year is now closed. If you are keen to visit a primary or secondary school, we suggest contacting schools directly within your local area. Our programme will commence again in the second half of the autumn term to support applications for a September 2020 start date **
"Thank you very much for a brilliant day. All the staff and children were so nice. It was lovely to see a school day in progress."
"Thank you very much for today - It's been really interesting to see learning in action, and to hear more about GLF."
We believe that having some school experience is important if you are considering training to be a teacher; it allows you to see the nature of the role and make sure that it is right for you before you apply or undertake your training.
We recommend that applicants have completed at least five days of recent experience in the classroom prior to applying so that you can reflect on your observations in your UCAS personal statement and discuss them at interview. We also encourage applicants to have experience in at least two different schools over the last year if possible.
We do however appreciate that if you are in full time employment, you may not be able to take time off work to gain school experience. School experience is therefore not a conditional part of your application, and we would be looking for the qualities outlined in our person specification when reviewing applications.
Many of our applicants come to teaching through being a classroom assistant. If you think you would benefit from spending time in school prior to applying for training, please see the GLF careers page.
During your school visit you will have the opportunity to:
- talk to teachers about day-to-day school life
- observe teaching and pastoral work
- watch a range of lessons and age groups being taught in your specialist subject
All of this will give you valuable insight and a great focus point for your application and interviews.
Please note, for both primary and secondary school experience visits:
- Priority will be given to candidates who have expressed a preference for training on a programme starting in September 2020.
- Dates may be subject to change at short notice.
- There is an adminstrative charge for school experience visits - please refer to the information below.
- For safeguarding reasons, all visitors should bring a current DBS certificate which must be shown to reception on the day of the visit. If you do not have a DBS, photo ID in the form of a passport or driving licence should be presented and you will be escorted at all times whilst on the school premises.
Our School Experience programme is hosted by Glyn School, Ewell. We are able to offer two days of secondary experience in Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computing, English, MFL (French and/or Spanish), Music, Drama, Art and Design, Business Studies, PE, History, Geography and RS.
Availability of places is limited by faculty size, so please try and be flexible with your dates. We will endeavour to book you in for a visit but cannot guarantee a place.
We charge an administrative fee of £25 for secondary school experience visits. Once you have had confirmation of your dates, payment will be required in advance and is non-refundable.
Due to a high demand for places, we can only offer a maximum of 2 days at Glyn School.
Dates for 2020/19 will be published soon.
Please note we are unable to offer secondary school experience visits in the summer term due to timetable disruptions over the exam period.
We will endeavour to place applicants at one of our partnership schools in the Surrey area for a 1 day school experience visit. We charge an adminstrative fee of £15 for all visits; once you have had confirmation of your dates, payment will be required in advance and is non-refundable. Please click here if you are interested in gaining experience in a primary school setting.
Please note we are unable to offer primary school experience visits in the summer term.
