Subject Knowledge Enhancement Courses

Government sponsored Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses are available if you would like to train to teach in the following shortage subjects:

  • biology
  • chemistry
  • computing
  • design and technology
  • English
  • geography
  • languages
  • mathematics
  • physics
  • religious education

SKE courses can be taken online, and are available in a range of lengths from 8 weeks to 28 weeks (depending on the subject); part-time study options are available. If you meet the eligibility requirements you also may be eligible for a tax free SKE training bursary of up to £5,600 for a 28 week course or £2,400 for a shorter 12 week course.

SKE courses are a great way to prepare you for initial teacher training by helping you gain the depth of subject knowledge and skills that you will need to help you teach your chosen subject.  We therefore recommend that all our trainees applying to teach a shortage subject, complete an SKE course.
