Early Years Initial Teacher Training
GLF Schools' Teacher Training is very pleased to offer the Graduate Employment-based route in Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT), leading to Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS), from September 2019. This qualification allows candidates to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of Early Years Teachers Standards to current or future employers.
Early Years covers the age range 0-5 years (nursery to reception) only.
Candidates must meet all of the following criteria:
- Be currently employed in an Early Years setting (school / nursery)
- Hold a first degree of a United Kingdom higher education institution or equivalent qualification. Any equivalent qualifications must be one single qualification, not an aggregation of a number of separate qualifications.
- Must have achieved a minimum standard equivalent to a grade 4 (C) in the GCSE examinations in English and mathematics, and additionally have achieved a standard equivalent to a grade 4 (C) in a GCSE science subject.
- Successful applicants are required to pass the professional skills tests in literacy and numeracy prior to the start of the course.
- The DfE pays course fees and there is a financial incentive of £7,000 for employers.
- The course follows the academic year from September through to July.
- The course is part time and candidates will work towards gaining Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) whilst being employed by a school/early years setting. Trainees' working timetables will be no more than 90% of the full working hours of an early years teacher.
- The course follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and the Teacher’s Standards (Early Years), for the birth to five-age range.
- Candidates will be employed by a current host setting for the duration of the course, but will also be placed in a contrasting setting for a 6 week period (i.e. for a candidate employed in a nursery setting, they will have a 6 week placement in a reception class, and vice versa). This provides experience across the birth to five-age range to widen the candidate's area of expertise and knowledge.
- During the course candidates will also gain an understanding of progression to Key Stage 1 and a knowledge of Key Stage 2. To support this, candidates will be placed in a KS1 setting for 10 days and a KS2 setting for 1 day.
- Professional training takes place on designated Wednesday dates, either in phase specific groups or as part of a larger cohort with GLF primary and secondary trainees.
- All trainees will be supported by a mentor on a day to day basis. Mentors will also produce weekly observation records plus mentor meeting minutes giving positive advice and feedback on progress can be achieved.
- Progress on the course is reviewed on an ongoing review and assessment basis. Trainees will gradually build an Evidence Portfolio, with evidence bundles and annotations that demonstrate progress and the impact made on children’s learning. Assignments are built into the programme to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the EYFS and Early Years Teacher Standards.

- Interview days take place at one of our partnership schools. We operate a two stage selection process that may consist of the following tasks: a short presentation, a lesson planning exercise, a written test, a class based activity with a group of pupils, and a panel interview. - Successful candidates will gain EYTS (Early Years Teacher Status) which qualifies them to teach the 0-5 years age range. This qualification is not equivalent to QTS.
