Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT)
GLF Schools' Teacher Training is very pleased to offer two routes to Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS), the graduate entry route and the graduate employment-based route. By becoming an early years teacher, you’ll be qualified to deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage, teaching children in childrens' centres, private nurseries, school nurseries, and reception classes.
EYTS qualifies you to teach the 0-5 years age range and is not equivalent to QTS. For more detail on the available routes, please see the DfE webpage on Becoming and Early Years Teacher and the relevant sections below.
- Both routes follow the academic year from September through to July.
- Trainees will be in a main setting for the duration of the course, but will also be placed in a contrasting setting for a 6 week period (i.e. for a trainee with a placement in a nursery setting, they will have a 6 week placement in a reception class, and vice versa). This provides experience across the birth to five-age range to widen the candidate's area of expertise and knowledge.
- During the course trainees will also gain an understanding of progression to Key Stage 1 and a knowledge of Key Stage 2. To support this, trainees will be placed in a KS1 setting for 10 days and a KS2 setting for 1 day.
- Professional training takes place on designated Friday dates, either in phase specific groups or as part of a larger cohort with GLF primary and secondary trainees.
- All trainees will be supported by a mentor on a day to day basis. Mentors will also produce weekly observation records plus mentor meeting minutes giving positive advice and feedback on progress can be achieved.
- Progress on the course is reviewed on an ongoing review and assessment basis. Trainees will gradually build an Evidence Portfolio, with evidence and annotations that demonstrate progress and the impact made on children’s learning. Assignments are built into the programme to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the EYFS and Early Years Teacher Standards.
To train on either route, you will need:
- GCSE's, grade 4 (or equivalent) in English, mathematics and a science subject
- a degree (Level 6) from a UK higher education institution or equivalent qualification
- to take part in our rigorous selection process designed to assess your suitability to teach. This will include our in-house numeracy and literacy skills tests which replace the Professional Skills Tests.
- we are committed to protecting children and will undertake a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure check to ensure that all our trainees are suitable to train to teach.
- on the graduate employment-based route, you will need to have secured employment within a setting prior to your application.

Interview days take place at one of our partnership schools. We operate a two stage selection process, on the same day, that may consist of the following tasks: a short presentation, a planning exercise, a written test, a class-based activity with a group of children, a panel interview plus literacy and numeracy tests. Full interview details will be emailed 1 week before the interview date.
Graduate Entry Route
- The course is full-time for one year.
- As a trainee, you do not need to pay any tuition fees as we receive a funding grant directly from DfE – you may be eligibile for a bursary of up to £5,000 for graduates with a first class degree, £4,000 for graduates with a 2:1, and £2,000 for graduates with a 2:2.
Graduate Employment-based Route
- The course is part time over one year and candidates will work towards gaining EYTS whilst being employed by a school/early years setting. Trainees' working timetables will be no more than 90% of the full working hours of an early years teacher.
- The DfE pays the £7,000 course fees and there is a financial incentive of £7,000 for your employer.
